Batea Mahuida: trekking and mountain views in summer
Everything you need to know for the hike, with times and difficulty levels.
Batea Mahuida volcano is, for many, the must-do outing in Villa Pehuenia. An extinct crater almost 2,000 meters high, with a crystal-clear lagoon inside and 360° views taking in Lake Aluminé and Lake Moquehue, the Andes mountain range and several Chilean volcanoes. You can drive up to the lagoon, walk along its shore with minimal effort, or take on the climb to the crater’s rim for the full view.
Here’s what the full circuit is like, which stretches are easy and which one takes a bit more effort, so you can plan your visit according to the time and physical condition you have.
How to get to Batea Mahuida volcano
The access point is about 6-10 km from Villa Pehuenia, taking the road toward Icalma Pass (the border with Chile) and turning off toward the Batea Mahuida ski center. Entry is managed by the local Mapuche community, which charges an admission fee per vehicle. In summer, with the road in good condition, you can drive up to the base of the volcano in a regular car; after rain or on more demanding sections, a 4×4 is recommended.
Before you go
- Bring sun protection, water and hiking shoes: the terrain near the lagoon is sandy and the high-altitude sun is strong even on cooler days.
- Check road conditions before heading out, especially after rain.
- The admission fee is paid per vehicle at the entrance booth managed by the Mapuche community.
- If you’re planning to hike to the summit, wear proper footwear: the final stretch is short but steep and requires decent physical condition.
Summary: the stretches of the Batea Mahuida circuit
The circuit has different levels of difficulty depending on how far you want to go:
| Stretch | Difficulty | Duration | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirador de las Antenas | Easy | 1-2 hours | Panoramic view on the way to the volcano |
| Crater lagoon shoreline | Easy | 30-45 minutes | Flat walk along the shore of the lagoon |
| Climb to the summit | Moderate | 45-60 minutes | 360° view of the mountains and Chilean volcanoes |
Along the way: the Mirador de las Antenas
Before reaching the volcano, along the same road, is the Mirador de las Antenas: a short stop that already offers a panoramic view of a good part of Villa Pehuenia’s lake and lagoon system. It’s a good first glimpse of the landscape you’ll see, in full, from the top of the volcano.

The hike to the crater lagoon
From the parking area, at about 1,750 meters of altitude, a short and practically flat trail descends to the shore of the lagoon formed inside the crater. It’s a very accessible stretch, over sandy terrain with some rock, ideal for the whole family. Down there you’ll find a kind of gray volcanic sand beach, perfect for a relaxed walk along the water and taking photos with the volcano in the background.
The climb to the summit
For those who want to go further, the trail up to the crater’s rim starts from the lagoon. It’s short in distance but with a steep grade for almost the entire way, so it demands more physical effort than it seems at first glance: between 45 and 60 minutes of climbing at a normal pace, with no technical sections but a steady uphill. Any pair of hiking shoes will do, though it’s not a hike recommended for someone with no physical fitness at all.
The reward at the top is a 360° view: Lake Aluminé and Lake Moquehue with their islands, the Los Coihues peninsula, the town, and on the Chilean side, the Villarrica, Llaima and Icalma volcanoes. On clear days, you can even make out Lanín volcano on the horizon.
Batea Mahuida in winter
During snow season, the same mountain becomes a ski center run by the Mapuche community, with slopes designed for beginners and families. If you’re thinking of coming in July or August, we cover more about this season in the post What winter is like in Pehuenia: skiing, snow and plenty of quiet.
